The
house stands in the middle of Poldark Country, in a hidden valley
just outside the village of St Agnes, and is joined to the
spectacular north Cornwall coastal path by a gurgling stream that
runs through the gardens.
The property originated in the eighteenth century as the
captains quarters and the count house of the Wheal Liberty
Copper mine which was started in the 1740s and last worked
in the 1830s.
Liberty House is now famed for its quiet hospitality and its food:
fish and seafood straight from the sea; locally reared meat
from the village butcher and whenever possible vegetables grown in
the valley full English breakfast, and an optional set dinner
menu in the evening with a vegetarian choice.
All served with pride and care in the fully licensed captains
dairy and kitchen warmed by the Aga, or in the garden in the
evening sunshine.

The
accommodation has been carefully restored to its original simple
elegance with a sitting room with beamed ceiling, stone fireplace
and polished wooden floors. All
the guest rooms overlook the eight acres of gardens and woodland
around the house, the fields beyond and the now disused five
arched viaduct crafted in local stone and granite at the turn
of the century.
Guests may wish to walk up onto the viaduct and enjoy the
magnificent views down the valley to the Atlantic.
The wooded areas of the garden are an unspoiled haven for
wildlife with badgers and foxes; barn owls nesting each year,
buzzards, sparrow hawks, jays and green woodpeckers.
And herons which you may well see coming to the stream for
breakfast.

|
Beside
the water, along from the vegetable garden is an acre of lawn and
meadow; a special place to just sit and watch.
But this is a living garden too, Liberty House is owned and
run by a young family and its a place where children are
welcome to play and explore (and by arrangement pets too.)

One
of the many wonderful walks is to follow the stream from the
garden, down through Jehrico Valley, with its ruined beam engine
house and restored water mill and tin streaming, to the sea at
Trevellas Porth, where you can join the coastal path in either
direction.
As well as the quiet coves and sandy beaches, there are five
challenging golf courses, horse riding stables, tennis courts, a
gliding club, freshwater and course fishing, all within easy
reach; and badminton in the garden.
The fine surfing and family beaches of St Agnes at Chapel
Porth a totally unspoiled and protected National Trust cove
and Trevaunance where the village harbour used to be, are
within a few minutes drive.
Perranporth with its miles of golden sand and world famous
surfing beach is three miles away, and the cathedral city of Truro
with it Georgian main street, boutiques and antique markets is
seven miles.
A
perfect place from which to explore Cornwall.
When
you arrive at Liberty House you are assured of a warm family
welcome, traditional hospitality and fine food and wine in
surroundings where you can be at one with nature.
